Few objects carry as much Welsh history as the woollen blanket, and few mills carry more of it than Melin Tregwynt. There has been a mill on the site, a small white-washed building near the Pembrokeshire coast, since the seventeenth century. It was a family-run company from 1912 until 2022, when it became an Employee Ownership Trust. Toast has sold the mill's work for years, and for autumn and winter 2026 it has commissioned a Vintage Star Blanket in Plum/Spice, online from October.

The pattern comes from the Melin Tregwynt archive, and the construction is worth looking at closely. Toast calls it a reversible star weave, and its photographs show the colours swapping from face to face: the plum ground with spice-coloured stars on one side becomes spice with plum stars on the other. The blanket is finished with a simple hem rather than a fringe, which is what makes it fully reversible, so either face can be used on top.

The specification is short and reassuring: 100 per cent pure new wool, made in the United Kingdom, 120 by 200 centimetres, which is generous for a sofa throw and enough to lie across the foot of a double bed. Toast describes it as warm and weighty, which is what a dense, reversible weave tends to deliver.

There are two caveats on the label. Toast warns of possible colour rub and advises keeping the blanket away from light-coloured fabrics and upholstery, which is a real consideration with a deep plum dye on a pale sofa. Care is hand wash cold or dry clean. As a new seasonal colourway it has no owner reviews yet.

For anyone who wants a blanket with a provenance they can trace to a single building, made by people who now own the business, it is an easy recommendation. Those with a cream linen sofa should keep the two apart.

What's good
  • Reversible star weave from the Melin Tregwynt archive, with colours that swap face to face
  • 100 per cent pure new wool, made in the UK at an employee-owned mill
  • Generous 120 by 200cm size, hemmed rather than fringed, so either side can face up
What lets it down
  • Toast warns of colour rub onto light fabrics and upholstery
  • Hand wash cold or dry clean only

The verdict

A properly made Welsh wool blanket with real provenance and a pattern with a long past.

Best forAnyone who wants a warm, reversible wool blanket with a traceable maker and a long design history.
