Dennis Severs' House: Silent Night

You are not allowed to speak. That is the first rule, and within a few steps it stops feeling like a rule at all. At 18 Folgate Street the only sounds are ticking clocks and crackling fires, and the only light comes from candles.

Dennis Severs, the American-born artist who made this house his life's work, never meant it to be a museum in the usual sense. He dressed the rooms as though a family had only just stepped out, leaving food half eaten and fires still going. Silent Night takes that idea and sharpens it. With no guide and no commentary, you are left to read the rooms for yourself.

The house itself insists on fragrance. Perfume, woodsmoke, cloves and tobacco are all part of how it describes itself, and they do real work in the dark. Smell is what tells you someone has been here a moment ago. By the time you reach the upper floors you stop looking for the story and simply stand inside it.

The visit lasts 45 minutes, which is exactly right. It is long enough to settle into the hush and short enough that it never tips into endurance. It also sits at the opposite end of the season from shopping crowds, office parties and noise. For anyone who finds December loud, an hour of enforced quiet in an early eighteenth-century Spitalfields house is a rare kind of gift.

Be sensible about the details. Latecomers cannot be admitted, so aim to be outside well before your time and do not rely on the Tube running to plan. Photography and filming are not permitted, which means the memory is the only souvenir. Leave the phone in a pocket and let it go quiet. Wear shoes you can move softly in.

Winter dates have not been announced at the time of writing, so check the house's page before making any plans. Silent Night forms part of a winter programme that also includes an earlier October Silent Night and a candlelit ghost story reading around Halloween, so if the Christmas evenings are not yet listed, those are worth a look while you wait.
