Three evenings of music worth dressing for

A free-jazz orchestra in a Dalston room, English baroque in Marylebone and Handel under Wren's dome.

Saunter See · 11 October 2026

London is full of gigs. These are the ones where the room is as much of the reason as the music: a listening room in Dalston, the best chamber hall in the city and a cathedral floor under the dome.

Each is a single event or a short run, so the choice is about the date, not the weekend.

Jazz · Dalston · 3 to 5 November

Globe Unity Orchestra at Cafe OTO

Alexander von Schlippenbach's Globe Unity Orchestra marks its 60th anniversary with three evenings in one of London's best small listening rooms. The line-up is fifteen strong, with Evan Parker, Paul Lytton, Rudi Mahall, Daniel Erdmann, Axel Doerner and Aki Takase, who plays four-hands piano with Schlippenbach as he conducts. Cafe OTO says the group has been on its wish list since the venue opened.

Best for Anyone curious about free jazz who wants to hear it at close range.

Early music · Wigmore Hall · 30 October and 8 January

Arcangelo: an English Baroque Journey

Jonathan Cohen's period-instrument ensemble follows the Chapel Royal and its composers across two concerts. The October programme runs from Christopher Gibbons, Matthew Locke and Purcell through Pelham Humfrey, John Blow and Maurice Greene to Handel's O praise the Lord with one consent. The January concert features Carolyn Sampson and Hugo Hymas, with Cohen directing from the harpsichord. Each evening opens with a talk at 6pm. October is imminent, so January is the one to plan.

Best for A winter treat for someone who loves a small room and a good acoustic.

Handel's Messiah at St Paul's
Choral · St Paul's Cathedral · 2 December

Handel's Messiah at St Paul's

One evening, on the cathedral floor under the dome, with the Choir of St Paul's, the Cathedral Chorus and the City of London Sinfonia. There is a short interval, and seating is under the dome or in the nave. It is a better version of a Christmas concert than most, because the building does half the work.

Best for A date, a parent or anyone who thinks they have outgrown Messiah.
